Sailing is a great sport with styles of boat to suit everyone. Participation is increasing all the time with sailing’s success in the Olympics. Our training scheme acknowledges the tremendous advances in boats, equipment and people’s aspirations.

YOUTH SAILING
Our Youth sailing courses are designed to develop young people’s skills in a fun and enjoyable way, whilst following the RYA Youth Sailors Scheme. Under the guidance of a qualified instructor candidates will be introduced to new skills and techniques which will increase their confidence whilst developing a greater understanding of the sport.
RYA certificates are a significant achievement; Instructors sign off each skill as it is completed and once the stage has been achieved the certificate can be used in other areas of study, or activities such as PE at school and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
• (RYA log books are an additional £10.00 – a one off purchase).
• The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) recommended minimum age for starting sailing lessons is 7 years.
• All levels of sailors welcome (from novice through to the advanced) participants will be grouped accordingly.

ADULT SAILING

RYA LEVEL 1
START SAILING
This fun and exciting course is the perfect introduction to singlehanded sailing. Your instructor will cover all the basics including rigging, launching, how to sail in all directions and capsize recovery. You will spend most of the course afloat, however short theory sessions will ensure you have an understanding of topics such as tides and weather. By the end of the course you should be confident sailing in light winds under supervision. The course takes two days and once completed you have to skills to sail solo in light winds under supervision. It is recommended that all participants consolidate this short course with the RYA Level 2 course.(starting April/May)
RYA LEVEL 2
BASIC SKILLS
Like Level 1, this course is highly practical with the majority of the time spent on the water. This course sets out the foundations of sailing. You will be taught how to rig up you dinghy, launch it from the shore, and sail it in all directions relative to the wind direction. The best, wettest part of this course is the capsize recovery drill! There are also a couple of theory sessions covering personal safety, basic meteorology and basic navigation. By the end of the course you will be able to sail solo in light winds and make sound decisions in light to moderate winds. Basic race procedures, starting and techniques are also covered.
RYA LEVEL 3
BETTER SAILING
If you would like to gain more confidence in the skills and techniques already learnt, in Levels One and Two, and be introduced to a taster of the Advanced modules then this is the course for you. The programme will aim at better individual performance. It also develops your skills towards or achieving the RYA Seamanship and/or Day Sailing modules. Level three sailing covers skills such as handling the dinghy safely and competently in higher wind conditions and an advancement on performing manoeuvres such as man overboard and coming alongside.Depending on the prevailing weather conditions, it could include; more skilful tacking, gybing and upwind sailing, rig and boat tuning, introduction to spinnakers and sailing in stronger winds.
